RI’s Bradley Hospital Could Now be Eligible for New Funding Thanks to Provision by Sen. Whitehouse Washington, DC – Today the U.S. House of Representatives approved the Children’s Hospital GME Support Reauthorization Act of 2013.  The legislation, which authorizes federal support for graduate medical education (GME) in freestanding children’s teaching hospitals, includes a provision authored by U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) that extends the program to children’s psychiatric hospitals like Bradley Hospital in Rhode Island – making them eligible for the same CHGME funding that general hospitals have benefitted from for years.   The legislation was already passed by the U.S. Senate last November.  It now goes on to President Obama to be signed into law.

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representatives Jim Langevin (D-RI) and David N. Cicilline (D-RI) today announced that Rhode Island will receive over $1.47 million to help protect drivers on the state’s roadways.  These funds were awarded through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to support the state’s highway safety and data programs.

Please join us for a workshop with Rhode Island app development experts for high school students interested in competing in the House App Challenge this Saturday, April 5 at the East Providence Public Library from 12-2pm. High School students are invited to participate in the First Annual House Student App Challenge sponsored by Congressman David Cicilline to create a software application on the platform of their choice and engage in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) education. The winner's work will be recognized in Rhode Island and Washington, DC.

U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline, a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, will join residents of Rhode Island’s Portuguese-American community to welcome the newly confirmed U.S. Ambassador Bob Sherman to Rhode Island and host an event in his honor at the Brightridge Club in East Providence on Saturday, March 29th at 3:00 p.m. Ambassador Sherman, who is from neighboring Massachusetts, is an attorney and former assistant attorney general in Massachusetts.  He was nominated as ambassador to Portugal by President Barack Obama in July 2013 and confirmed by the Senate later that year in October.

The workshop is part of Facebook's Small Business Boost tour to provide small business owners guidance and best practices to optimize their presence on the world's largest social network. WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (D-RI) today urged the Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee to include targeted, job-creating investments in transportation infrastructure upgrades, advanced manufacturing, and education and workforce training in the Fiscal Year 2015 budget to boost employment.  Cicilline, a former member of the House Budget Committee, also highlighted the economic benefits of raising the minimum wage and protecting our social safety net - including nutrition programs, Medicare, and Medicaid.  Cicilline’s remarks, which were submitted to the House Budget Committee, follow: Thank you Chairman Ryan, Ranking Member Van Hollen, and members of the Budget Committee.

WASHINGTON, DC – Two Rhode Island social entrepreneurs today travelled to the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. at the invitation of U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (D-RI) to give a TED-style briefing to U.S. lawmakers on social enterprise.  Kelly Ramirez, CEO of Social Enterprise Greenhouse, and Amelia Friedman, a Brown University student and Executive Director of the Student Language Exchange, joined a panel including three other experts to discuss both the economic and public benefits of identifying and solving social problems.

NEWPORT, RI -- U.S. Senators Jack Reed (D-RI) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and U.S. Representatives Jim Langevin (D-RI) and David Cicilline (D-RI) today joined with Governor Lincoln D. Chafee in announcing $1.6 million in federal aid to help the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) cover costs of rebuilding and strengthening infrastructure damaged by Superstorm Sandy.  RIPTA will use $1,602,000 in Federal Transit Administration (FTA) funding to improve passenger protection and reduce flooding at the Newport Gateway Center, one of RIPTA’s major transit hubs.  The facility’s tent-like sails, which were designed to protect riders from sun and rain, were severely damaged by Superstorm Sandy in October 2012.

PAWTUCKET, RI - U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (D-RI) today delivered healthy meals to low-income Rhode Island seniors in North Providence as part of Meals On Wheels' 12th Annual March for Meals campaign.   Meals On Wheels Home Delivered Meal program is the only non-profit meal delivery service in Rhode Island and its staff and volunteers serve nearly 1,500 meals each day.  The program is partially funded through the federal Elderly Nutrition Program, which supports community-based services that help older Americans who may be at risk of losing their independence.

WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. House of Representatives today unanimously approved Congressman David N. Cicilline’s (D-RI) amendment to the ENFORCE Act to help ensure transparent accounting of taxpayer money spent under Republican backed legislation.  Cicilline’s amendment was the only Democratic amendment that was accepted by the Republican-led House. The ENFORCE Act, which is based on the false premise that the President has failed in his duty to faithfully execute the laws, could impose numerous and limitless costs on taxpayers.  Cicilline’s amendment, which acts as a safeguard to protect taxpayers, requires the Government Accountability Office to issue quarterly reports to Congress on the costs of litigation initiated by the United States House or Senate under this Republican-backed legislation.
