Cicilline Statement on Social Security, Medicare Projections

Thursday, June 7, 2018

WASHINGTON  – U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (RI-01), who serves on the Congressional Task Force on Seniors, issued the following statement today after the Trump administration announced the Medicare trust fund will be depleted by 2026 - three years earlier than previously expected - and that the Social Security Trust Fund will follow in 2034:

“Social Security and Medicare are benefits that Rhode Island seniors have earned after a lifetime of hard work. Finding a long-term solution for Social Security and Medicare should be a bipartisan issue. Unfortunately, President Trump and the Republicans who control Congress are more interested in cutting taxes for the wealthiest Americans and corporate special interests. And now we’re seeing that their billionaires-first tax bill is jeopardizing the future of Social Security and Medicare.”

“That’s unacceptable. When we take back the majority, Democrats will get to work strengthening these critical programs so they can continue to ensure a secure retirement for millions of Americans.”
