Cicilline Votes to Secure Voting Rights, Urges Senate to Protect Our Democracy

Washington, DC – Congressman David N. Cicilline (RI-01) released the following statement after voting to pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act, legislation to protect the fundamental right to vote.
“Today, for the third time, the House passed legislation to protect our democracy by safeguarding our elections and ensuring that every eligible American not only has the right to vote, but also has the access and ability to exercise that right.
“As President Biden said earlier this week, Jim Crow 2.0 is now – in the form of voter suppression and election subversion. We cannot allow the Jim Crow relic that is the filibuster to once again block the advancement of and protection of civil rights. To fight back, to preserve our democracy, and to ensure that Congress and our nation’s laws reflect the will of the people, the Senate must abolish the filibuster.
“We are at a turning point, and we must act now to preserve our democracy for generations to come.”
