Cicilline Statement on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Tuesday, January 21, 2014

PAWTUCKET, RI – U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (D-RI) released the following statement in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day:

“Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream for our nation focused on the belief that every member of our society should live a life with dignity and opportunity free from prejudice and injustice.  We have made great progress toward realizing that dream.

“As a society, we have a responsibility to improve the lives of our fellow citizens who are experiencing hunger, homelessness, joblessness, or despair.  That is why I will continue to fight in Congress to renew emergency unemployment insurance for 1.5 million Americans, including more than 4,900 Rhode Islanders who have been cut off from this vital economic lifeline, work to raise the minimum wage, pass comprehensive immigration reform, and ensure that every young person has access to a quality public education.  The best way to honor Dr. King’s legacy is to advance policies that expand economic opportunity, promote job creation, grow our economy, and build ladders of opportunity.

“Today, we rededicate ourselves to Dr. King’s vision so that every member of our society has the opportunity to achieve the American Dream.”
