WASHINGTON - U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (D-RI) issued the following statement today:
"Julian Bond defined his life through an unwavering and unparalleled commitment to public service, non-violence, and advocacy for those on the margins of society. As one of the most eloquent voices of the civil rights movement, Julian Bond helped found both the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and the Southern Poverty Law Center; spent two decades as a member of the Georgia General Assembly; and served ten years as Chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People."
"Dr. Martin Luther King said that 'the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.' Over 75 years, Julian Bond never backed down from a challenge or a controversy. He marched for civil rights, spoke out against war, demonstrated to bring down apartheid, and worked to advance the cause of LGBT equality."
"My thoughts are with his wife, Pamela Horowitz, his five children, and the entire Bond family today."
