Cicilline Slams Trump for Walking Away from COVID Relief Talks

Wednesday, October 7, 2020

PAWTUCKET – Democratic Policy and Communications Committee (DPCC) Chair David N. Cicilline issued the following statement tonight:

“Almost nine months after COVID-19 first came to our country, President Trump and the Republicans in Congress still don’t get it.”

“More than 200,000 Americans are dead. Millions are out of work. The American people are hurting. That’s why House Democrats passed the Heroes Act almost five months ago to provide $3 trillion to keep first responders and health care workers on the job, strengthen our health care system, and expand our country’s testing capacity.”

“Mitch McConnell didn’t even give it a vote. So last week we passed another round of funding and once again asked the White House and Republicans in Congress to work with us to get something done. They’re still not listening.”

“President Trump’s decision to walk away from negotiations today is an act of desperation. It shows his contempt for science, his refusal to do what it takes to crush the virus, his disdain for frontline workers, and his total lack of empathy for what working men and women are going through.”

“Over and over again, this president has put himself ahead of the people he serves. Republicans in Congress should be demanding that he return to the negotiating table. The fact that they’re not doing that tells you all you need to know about their complicity in perpetuating this crisis.”

“The American people deserve better.”
