Cicilline, Democrats Pass Largest Ethics, Government Reform Package in Half Century

WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (RI-01) joined House Democrats today in passing the For The People Act (H.R.1), a sweeping reform package that returns power in Washington to the American people. The legislation, which now heads to the U.S. Senate, includes three provisions Cicilline has proposed in recent years – The Automatic Voter Registration Act, The Presidential Tax Disclosure Act, and the DISCLOSE Act.

“It is past time that Washington start working again For The People of this great country,” said Congressman Cicilline. “This landmark legislation will fix what is broken in our democracy. It expands access to the ballot, reduces the corrupting influence of corporate money in political campaigns, and restores ethics and integrity in government. I’m especially pleased that it includes my proposals to make it easier to vote, require greater transparency from presidential candidates, and limit the influence of corporations over our government. The Senate should pass this bill without delay and send it to President Biden’s desk.”

“We owe a great deal of gratitude to Congressman David Cicilline for propelling this historic bill into passage. He has been at the forefront in the fight to root out corruption in Washington and protect the right to vote,” said End Citizens United / Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller. “The common sense reforms in the For the People Act – including Rep. Cicilline’s DISCLOSE Act which is embedded in H.R. 1 – will restore the promise of our democracy and return power back to the people. We’re grateful to be in the fight alongside Congressman Cicilline to safeguard and strengthen our democracy.”

Key provisions of H.R. 1, the For the People Act, include:

  • Expanding automatic voter registration.
  • Mandating that presidential candidates to release their taxes.
  • Requiring dark money groups to disclose their corporate funders.
  • Strengthening vote by mail, early voting and ballot access.
  • Combating voter intimidation and voter suppression.
  • Protecting elections from foreign interference.
  • Fixing partisan gerrymandering.
  • Promoting digital ad transparency.
  • Reining in lobbyist influence.
  • Enforcing ethics and conflict of interest rules for all government officials.
