Happy Labor Day

Monday, September 1, 2014

American workers are the best and most dedicated workers in the world. I see examples of this every time I visit a workplace in Rhode Island. Whether at a manufacturing facility in Woonsocket, a family farm in Newport or a small business in Providence, I meet Rhode Islanders who are working hard to provide for themselves and their families.

On Labor Day, we celebrate and honor the hard-working men and women in our great country.  Workers who have distinguished themselves in their commitment to excellence by making tremendous progress in improving the infrastructure, education, and security of America and richly deserve this day of recognition.

Today, we also pause to remember the great leaders of the labor movement, past and present, who have done so much to improve the lives of working families by fighting for safe working conditions, better wages and benefits, and the right to organize and bargain collectively.

Finally, in addition to honoring the legacy of American workers and their achievements that helped build this great country, we should also mark Labor Day by renewing our commitment to protecting American workers and building a stronger middle class.  In Congress, Democrats have a plan to raise the minimum wage, renew unemployment benefits, and guarantee women receive equal pay for equal work. I look forward to working on these issues when Congress reconvenes so that we can expand opportunity and grow our economy.

I wish you and your family a very happy Labor Day and hope you enjoy the time with family and friends.
