Cicilline Statement on Passing of James Brady

Monday, August 4, 2014

PAWTUCKET, RI – U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (D-RI), a founding member of the national organization Mayors Against Illegal Guns, today issued the following statement after learning of the death of former White House Press Secretary James Brady:

“Like all Americans, I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of James Brady today. As a former White House Press Secretary and dedicated public servant, Mr. Brady’s words helped shape the President’s strong connection to the American people, but his voice was strongest as an advocate for commonsense gun safety legislation. Following an assassination attempt on the life of President Reagan where Mr. Brady was tragically shot, he and his loving wife Sarah devoted their lives to preventing gun violence and played an essential role in passing the Brady Handgun Violence Protection Act. Mr. Brady also served as an Honorary Member of the Board of Trustees at the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, which bears his name and has been a valuable partner of Mayors Against Illegal Guns. His courage, work and strong advocacy to strengthen gun laws has saved lives and made communities across America safer. He leaves behind a great legacy, and I extend my deepest sympathies to his wife Sarah, entire family and friends.”
