About David Cicilline

The Honorable David N. Cicilline took the oath of office as the 36th mayor of Providence, on January 6, 2003, after being elected by an overwhelming 84% of the vote.

A graduate of Brown University and Georgetown School of Law, this former attorney and professor of law, began his political career as a four-term state representative. It was there, where he earned a reputation as a fierce champion of political and gun safety reform, dedicated to ethics in government.
Cicilline’s message of reforming municipal government and making it open, honest and predictable, while offering programs and services the residents need most and want, has helped make Providence one of America’s most livable cities.

In his first three years of office, Mayor Cicilline has modernized city government, encouraged more than $2.5 billion in new development, made our streets safer, improved our city schools and focused on our neighborhoods.

As Mayor, Cicilline

  • created the first-ever, citywide community policing program, cutting crime by double digits for two consecutive years
  • launched an after-school network - the Providence After School Alliance - PASA to keep kids safe when they are out of school.
  • put street workers in the community to combat youth gun- and gang-violence, and has provided funding and services to our 25 diverse neighborhoods.

Whether it’s earning national awards for excellence in the arts or winning headlines for eliminating corruption and old-style politics, Mayor David N. Cicilline’s vision and hard work have made Providence a model of great government and a city in which we can all be proud.
